  • Duncan:

This past Christmas my sister had a problem with money (it WAS solved).
For Christmas we each recieved a 100$ gift card from our grandparents. I got 100$ for LEGO and my sister got 100$ for TOYS R US. We all agreed that we would NOT go to the store so we ordered online. My order went through perfectly and arrived a week later but my sister’s did NOT go so well. See, she apparently ordered something that they didn’t have in-stock and they sent an email telling us. We figured, what the heck we can just order something else, but TOYS R US did not. The thing was like 30$ and when we clicked the “order” button, it didn’t go through. See, APPARENTLEY the card was already used up because we had already ordered the other thing even though it wasn’t in-stock. We phoned several times but we kept getting either the machine or some idiot new employee. Eventually the manager picked up and the order went through (after about 4 hours total on the phone) and they gave us free D-LUXE shipping.

  • jimmie:

    Your on the news!

    Your on news!

  • Joanne:

Adrian–good luck with the banks. Not only should they not take kids’ money, but they should not be allowed to take ANYONE’S money. Neither should they be allowed to charge fees that are greater than the interest someone makes. What’s the point of putting your money in the bank for a long period of time if you are going to come out with less. I mean, I put my money in and the bank uses it to make money for themselves and I have to pay them for the privilege????

If I didn’t HAVE to use a bank, I wouldn’t. I hope you make the banks take notice and make some changes for the regular people of the world! Good Luck!!

  • Eriisuchan:

    Hey Adrian!

When I saw your story on the news, I felt so bad. Since I work for a bank too, my first thought was “A youth account shouldn’t HAVE bank fees (since ours don’t) and shouldn’t just be closed!”, I don’t work for TD, so I don’t know their rules, but I was still outraged!

Anyway, I saw that they plan on boosting your savings up $500! At least there are some good news! Good for you for bringing this up and speaking up for yourself! :)

Keep playing that violin, too, you’re sounding great!

  • Jane:

Just a reminder to all of you children who have bank accounts. Check the account and be sure it is appropriate for you. Most banks offer youth accounts with zero banking fees, and pay interest. It would have been a good idea for your parents to check this before signing the documents. And you can check too, ask your parents to sign up for online banking and you will see the transactions that go through each month. Remember, your money is your responsibity.

  • Cindy:

    Hi Adrian,
I thought I would share my story with you after watching your segment on CTV just to show you that TD Canada Trust is lying. It was no mistake. They are only claiming it was a mistake because you went public!
I opened a “no fee youth account” for my daughter when she was 1 year old. When she was 3, we received a letter addressed to her advising that she had not used her account in 12 months and they were going to apply a “dormant” fee of $38.00. I went to the branch and I got very angry with them saying “How often do you people suppose a 3 year old needs to use her account”. They tried to tell me it was a mistake. I said “How can you claim that, when I opened the account you asked for her birth certificate, you know she is only 3 years old!” Anyway, I closed my daughter’s account at TD Canada Trust and I closed my own accounts. We now bank at BMO without problems!

  • adrian:

That’s a great idea! Thanks for the tip on BMO. I’m wondering what is the best bank for kids? BMO sounds good. Why is there
no such thing as a kids bank? I guess banks can’t do business with kids. My mom says it has to do with
    the Bank of Canada rules.

  • adrian:

Yes, they offered $500.00! I’m grateful. I wonder if it will earn interest:-) LOL

  • adrian:

Hey Kylie, I make money selling old stuff that i don’t find useful anymore. Anyone need tap dancing shoes, size 1? LOL
    Adrian

  • adrian:

  • Mandy:

I’m 25 years old, and this very same thing happened to me when I was around 10 or 11 years old. I opened an account with $20 at CIBC and about a year later I received a letter informing me that, not only had my account been closed, but now I owed them $5! I didn’t open another bank account until I was 18, and since I lost my money at CIBC, I decided to open an account with a different bank.
I’m glad to see you’re raising this issue because who knows how often this happens! Kids’ money really should be off-limits to bank fees. I wish I could get my $20 + 15 years interest back!

  • Why did the bank take your money?

  • Ms M:

Adrian! I just saw the CTV report – well done!

  • adrian:

Montana, nice to hear from you. The bank took the money because I hadn’t used the account in a few years and they called it “dormant” and closed the account. They are not supposed to do that to “no fee” youth accounts. Hope to see you again soon, Adrian

  • Tobey, go on the news again and give us more advice
